The name MacLaren, or McLaren and various other spellings, may originate from Labhran of Ardveche, the hereditary Celtic Abbot of Achtus, in Balquhidder, Perthshire. In the old tradition, Mac or Mc, is a meaning for "son of" which may not have always been in a direct sibling sense, but could also have represented a broader family relationship. Thus, the MacLarens could be considered as "sons of" the ancient Clann Labhruinn.

Some reports indicate that the original bloodline of the MacLarens goes back over 1,500 years, and descends from Lorn, son of Fergus Erc, who landed in Argyll around AD 503 and founded the kingdom of Dalriada. There are many family names associated with the clan and these are are officially listed as the septs of the clan.

The Clan MacLaren homelands, since the 12th century, can be traced to the lands around Balquhidder and Strathearn, in Perthshire, Scotland. However, there was also a branch of the clan associated with the island of Tiree. The parish of Balquhidder contains a kirk (church) built in 1855, and a ruined kirk in the village can be dated from 1631, with an even earlier ruin nearby-by. The grave of "Rob Roy" MacGregor lies in the churchyard.

The clan badge shown at the top of this page, carries the slogan "Creag an tuirc" which translates to the Boar's Rock -- probably taken from the name of a local crag (rocky hill) which now overlooks the kirk. The clan plant is laurel.

Over the centuries, the Clan MacLaren has had a turbulent existence. MacLaren's fought for Scotland in many of the great battles, with records of their presence at Bannockburn (1314), at Sauchieburn (1488), at Flodden (1513), and at Pinkie (1547). The clan lost much of it's power when the Earldom of Strathearn was seized by the crown in 1379. The Stewarts of Appin were founded by the son of a marriage between a son of the Stewart Lords of Lorn and a daughter of MacLaurin of Ardveche. The MacLarens and Stewarts of Appin fought side-by-side at Culloden (1746), and many died on that tragic day.

Perhaps because of the poor fortunes at home the MacLarens were known as travellers, and there are 15th century records of them being mercenary soldiers in France, Italy and Sweden.

In the "Great Rising" of 1745, MacLaren of Invenenty was taken prisoner but later made his escape via a perilous leap into the "Devil's Beef Tub", a steep-sided corrie near Moffat. This legendary feat was epitomised by the writing of Sir Walter Scott in his novel "Redgauntlet".

The clan has also been distinguished in peacetime. Colin MacLaurin was a much acclaimed professor of mathematics at Edinburgh University in 1745, and he is also credited with translating the Psalms into Gaelic.

Of course, most people today are probably familiar with the name due to the Team McLaren F1 racing team. Bruce McLaren was a well-respected F1 champion in the 1960's and won the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix while driving his own car.

The house of MacLaren of Auchleskine has been recognized as the main branch and in 1957 the Lyon Court adjudged the clan Chief to be Donald MacLaren of MacLaren and Achleskine.

Clan Societies are relatively modern associations which have sprung up around the clans themselves. (One might argue that a clan is a type of "society", so why have a society of a society -- nevertheless, there is a function for these societies in our modern world where marketing tactics are mightier than the sword). The Clan MacLaren Society was founded in 1960 and has branches in Scotland, Australia, and North America. The Clan MacLaren Society of North America was chartered in Texas in 1967.
